Our Purpose The Illinois Society of Medical Assistants is a professional organization which supports the versatile medical assistant. The state is the governing body for the local chapters and is the vehicle through which the members are affiliated to the American Association of Medical Assistants. WHAT IS A MEDICAL ASSISTANT The Medical Assistant is an ancillary worker performing a variety of duties in many health care environments. The Medical Assistant is a multi-skilled health care professional performing clinical and administrative functions. The qualified Medical Assistant has the unique privilege of acting as a liaison between the physician and/or other health care workers and their patients. The opportunity afforded the Medical Assistant in this regard is one of great importance and responsibility. Education and certification are addressed under AAMA Accredited Schools.
